How to keep white bedding WHITE!

I never thought it would be possible to have white bedding without going absolutely crazy trying to keep it white, but I decided to give it a try and have successfully lived with it for years. Two comments I see often when I post my bedroom on Instagram are:

  1. You must not have kids.
    - WRONG!
  2. You must not have pets.
    - That is a true assumption!

I really think people forget that there are real people behind the screen and we do actually read the comments. And guess what? I even respond to them!

Engaging with my readers and social media following is a big reason I continue to put myself out there. It's fun to hear from you guys! But it's not fun when people assume they know my lifestyle because I have white bedding. LOL

Just like I tell my kids...

  • Delivery is everything.
  • Don't assume. Ask!
  • Embrace the philosophy "to each their own".

So rather than assuming I don't have kids or pets, it would be better to ask how I keep my white bedding white and I would be delighted to share!

*End rant*

If white bedding is still not your thing - to each their own!

See what I did there? ;)

Home remedy on how to keep white bedding white

I will start by saying that I do not have white sheets. I like contrast and just haven't had the desire to go all white.

While I do have two kids, I do not have pets so I can't say whether or not I would attempt white bedding with pets because I haven't been in that situation. I'm sure people do it and make it work.

So what's my secret?

Vinegar!

White bedding will naturally discolor as we use it and wash it. It starts to become dingy and not as bright and fresh, but rather than turning to harsh chemicals like bleach - break out the vinegar. Don't be scared. The vinegar smell is faint and goes away as soon as you wash it - unlike bleach.

Keep white bedding white with vinegar

All you have to do is:

  • Fill the tub with enough hot water to cover the bedding
  • Pour 1/3 - 1/2 of a gallon size jug of vinegar in the water
  • Lightly agitate to mix the water and vinegar
  • Let soak overnight (or all day)

When it's done soaking:

  • Drain water and wring out the bedding the best you can
  • Transfer to the washer and wash like you normally would!

TIP: After you wring out the bedding, transfer it to a bin (I use a large trash bag) to transfer it to the washer to avoid a puddle trail from the tub to the washer.

Super easy and super effective! This same method also works great for stinky clothes. My teenage son and husband both have smelly gym clothes so when they start to smell (even after a good washing) we use the same method above and the smell is completely gone!

Thanks C. I have never done this and am definitely gonna try it with my white bedding! GREAT tip.

Works like a charm! Xo

Thanks for this post! About how often do you wash in the vinegar?

My pleasure! Just when I start to notice discoloration.

Thank you so much for sharing such a great tip, Christina! I will try it with my white towels :) And here's a tip I just found out about (or perhaps I knew and forgot). In order to remove blood or red wine from fabric, just soak in hydrogen peroxide and it comes right out! My only problem is that many times I'm spilling wine on fabrics that should be dry cleaned so I've not tried it on those items. Thank you, Christina!

That's a GREAT tip - thank YOU for sharing!! xo

Beautiful bedroom! Thank you so much for the vinegar tip! I do have mostly all white bedding - plus a little fluffy Bichon dog. So it's nice to learn a brightening option. ✨✨✨

I hope you love it as much as I do!
