Creating the Earthy Retreat

I won't even lie... bedrooms are one of my favorite projects.  Maybe it's something about creating coziness.  Maybe it's something about creating a calming space.  Myabe it has to do with dreamier dreams.  Maybe it's those reasons and alot more!

I had so much fun creating this space for a client recently.  During our consultation she expressed how much she loved the color palette of a local restaurant (that I happen to love too) called The Greene House.  The earthy greens and natural woods is what she wanted to incorporate, and as soon as she said that my wheels started turning and I couldn't wait to get started!

Observing her personal style through the other areas of her home, I knew I wanted to incorporate a midcentury modern flair with new furniture to complement her existing bed frame, and add the cozy and calming feel with neutrals, greens and golds in linens, pillows and decor.  I also knew I wanted to incorporate some of her existing items.  She had beautiful mirrored frames with photos from some of the trips she's taken around the world, and she also loves books.  Those were two things I made sure to incorporate so the space still feels like "her".

The items I knew we needed to replace were bedside tables and a new chest of drawers as she recently moved from a large house into a cozy one-bedroom luxury apartment.  The current bedroom furniture was oversized and cramped the new space so I took measurements, went back to my computer and went to work!

Step one was creating the mood board below to give her an idea of my vision and make sure I'm on track with her goals.

Earthy Retreat Mood Board

This is where I encourage my clients to give me honest feedback.  This is your space and if there is something you don't like, we will discuss it.  She loved everything but wasn't completely sold on a green coverlet.  I understood her concern as it was quite a bit bolder than what she currently had in there, but this was the piece that was going to bring her end goal to life.  We talked about it and compromised on plan A and plan B:

  1. Let's put the coverlet in there with a large white throw or comforter (for added warmth during the winter) at the foot of the bed to break up the green.
  2. If she still wasn't feeling the green when she saw everything together, I'd find something else for her (between you and me... I knew she'd love it... and she did! Shhhhhh...).

My only concern was it being an online purchase because you never know how accurate the color will be until you see it in person.  I warned her that I may not even like it when it comes and we may have to move to plan B anyway.  Turns out it was exactly what I was hoping for, so it was a keeper (pending her approval in the end, of course).

Once I had everything in my possession it was time to redecorate.  Out with the old, in with the new!  Here are some before and afters, and the full size photos can be viewed in my portfolio.

Final project cost: $963
