DIY Budget Friendly Modern Home Office Makeover | Hudson Valley Lighting

Our spare bedroom has worn a lot of hats…

First it was a guest room that never got used.

Guest Room

Then I turned it into my closet because our master closet is a poor excuse for a master closet.

Then it morphed into my cloffice (a.k.a. closet/office) when I launched my interior design business and needed a space to work from home.

Cloffice

Whew! That’s a lot of hats in just four short years.

As with all of my projects, I did this modern home office makeover as budget friendly as possible and I’ll give you a couple tips on how I keep costs down on most of my projects.

This post contains affiliate links at no cost to you, and lighting was provided by Hudson Valley Lighting. All statements and opinions are 100% my own, and I will never recommend a product to you that I have not tried first and stand behind myself.

Every one of my makeovers/remodel projects start with a mood board.  Mood boards are more than just a collage to see how pieces come together… they allow you to begin sourcing and budgeting as well.

{Psst… this is also a service I offer if you need assistance pulling a space together.]

Cost Saving Tip #1

I begin shopping my home before purchasing any additional items. For example, I shopped my house and pulled in the rugs, faux skull, framed art and faux Fiddle Leaf Fig from other rooms.

Cost Saving Tip #2

I list items for sale that I can’t use in the space (or anywhere else in my house). I sold my old desk, chair, bench and light fixture, then used those funds toward the new items that I needed to purchase.

Cost Saving Tip #3

I mentioned mood boards earlier, and these are also great for being budget savvy because you can shop sale items and if you find something similar at a better price, you simply plug it into the mood board to see if your vision is still in line.

Lighting

Lighting is one thing I will splurge on because it can make or break a space. When I envisioned my office, I knew I wanted an organic desert vibe with a fixture inspired by the one I used in my son’s bathroom remodel for the one room challenge last spring.

Since I source items often for clients, I started with Mitzi because I know they have some really funky modern lighting options. While perusing their site I came across the perfect fixture – their Astrid 4-light chandelier in aged bronze and black. It fit the inspiration I had in mind and the overall vibe of my office to a T.

It required some assembly, but nothing complicated and you can feel the quality in the weight of the fixture – as with all Hudson Valley Lighting brands.

Since I’ll be doing Maskcara color matches in here, I couldn’t afford to have amber colored bulbs in the chandelier so I used the same daylight Edison bulbs that I used in my sons bathroom. They’re the only Edison bulbs I’ve found that aren’t amber!

If you’re accustomed to soft white or amber bulbs, these may seem to have a bit of a blueish appearance at first (as most daylight bulbs do). However, once you have them in for a few days and your eyes adjust, you will realize how truly bright white they are. I love them so much I ended up changing out almost every bulb in my house!

The original layout plan was to have my desk against the wall, so I wanted an interesting table lamp for it. As soon as I saw Mitzi’s Asime table lamp in aged brass I couldn’t get it in my office fast enough! Although I always  read measurements, this one took me by surprise – in a good way. I love the size of the bulb that comes with it, and it’s such an interesting piece that sparks conversation with clients.

I wasn’t loving the desk facing the wall because it left the center of the room awkwardly bare, so I ended up switching the layout and now my desk is perpendicular to the wall. It feels much more balanced, but there’s always a catch…

Where do I put my fun lamp??

I didn’t like it on my desk with the new layout because I could see the cord running down the wall. Ultimately it ended up on the storage cabinet behind my desk where I can hide the cord, and I love it there!

Where there’s a will, there’s a way!
